Sri Alluri Sita Rama Raju (A great leader of our country) 04 July 1897 –  06 May  1924 Raju was born on July 4, 1897 in Mogallu, near the town of Bhimavaram in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. His mother was from Visakhapatnam while his father was a native of Mogallu, near Bhimavaram and an official photographer in the central jail at Rajahmundry. The young Raju lived mainly in Mogallu [1] and was educated in Rajahmundry at the Vullithota Bangarayya school, as well as in Kakinada, Tuni and Ramachandrapuram in the East Godavari district. Raju's father died when he was in elementary school and he grew up in the care of his uncle, Rama Chandra Raju, a tehsildar in Narsapur in the West Godavari district. It was a day in January 2006, and the morning held a mild chill despite the bright winter sun. I sat at a distance on one of the wooden benches in the veranda. The old house located in a labour colony, which served as a clinic and maternity home, belonged to a bygone era. The veranda was not an ideal waiting room, but the anxious women did not seem to care. I was struck by the obscurity of the setting, where we were all waiting to meet the same woman: the legendary Col (Dr) Lakshmi Sahgal. NDA regime constructed 50% of national highways laid in last 30 years: Centre

 NEW DELHI: The UPA government on Monday admitted before the Supreme Court that the NDA regime, in five years, constructed nearly half the total length of national highways laid during the last 32 years. In an interesting affidavit filed before the apex court, the Centre said the length of national highways in the country was 29,023 km in 1980, which expanded to 76,818 km by the end of 2012. This means 47,795 km of national highways was added by successive governments in 32 years.  However, the affidavit revealed that during 1997-2002 (ninth five-year plan), when the NDA was in power, 23,814 km of national highways was added to the existing NH network, or nearly 50% of the total length of national highways constructed in three decades. This remains the largest construction of national highways during any five-year period since independence.
